The first reading invites us to love one another in deed and in truth, putting our faith into practice as we recognize the needs of those around us and respond with the compassion of Jesus Christ.

"What are you looking for?" Jesus asks the two disciples, and his question continues to speak to our hearts today.  As we draw near to the Lord we have the opportunity to seek our hearts' desire from the one who knows us best.

John the Baptist testifies that Jesus is the one who takes away our sins.  As we renew our faith each day, may we seek Jesus above all else and commit our lives to his saving grace.

The Prologue of the Gospel of John proclaims Jesus Christ - God's Word - who became flesh that we might see and know him.  As we draw near to our Savior, we rejoice over God's love and offer our lives as living witnesses of the Lord.

As Simeon held the Christ Child in his arms praising God, he recalls the fulfillment of the Lord's promises and points to the redemption of humanity.  May we look back and see how God has touched our lives and embrace each day as a new opportunity to the serve the Lord with full hearts!

Surrounded by the glory of Christmas, we have a chilling reminder of the reason why the Lord came into our world.  Fueled by rage, jealousy, and hate, King Herod attempts to kill the Christ Child by having every baby boy under two killed in the region around Bethlehem.  The senseless violence strikes a chord in our hearts to protect life, inspiring us to proclaim the Prince of Peace in our world today.

John's testimony about Jesus as the Word of God provides us with an opportunity to reflect in this Octave of Christmas:

  1. How do we hear the Word of God in our lives today?
  2. How do we proclaim the Word of God to one another?

The Christmas story touches our hearts and gets past our defenses.  Why?  Because babies evoke a loving response!  God's love story with humanity helps us see how the Lord - in taking on our human form - helps us to draw near through the gentleness of an infant.  May the Christ child take us by the hand and lead us this Christmas to embrace our faith and give glory to God through the gift of our lives.

The baptism of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke today invites us to consider how our own baptism ignites the fire of faith in our lives.  Each day we have unique opportunities to share the gift of grace that comes from our own baptism - extending the light and love of Christ in our world.

Fr. Andrew's nieces and nephews help him explore the reading from 1 John in Mass today.  God loves us - even when we are far from perfect - and strengthens us to love each other.  Sometimes it is difficult (if not downright painful) to love like Jesus...but we call upon the Lord to help us with his grace to love one another.

Fr. Andrew's nieces and nephews talk about how Jesus walked on the water to the disciples during a storm.  May we recall that just as Christ calmed the storm and comforted his friends, we too can draw near to the Lord in the storms and fears of our lives.

The Miracle of the Fishes and Loaves reminds us that God continues to Take, Bless, Break, and Give from the little we offer and transform it into abundance.  With a little help from his nieces and nephews, Fr. Andrew reminds us that every Mass participates in the grace of Jesus Christ.

The light of the star guided the sight of the wise men to the infant Jesus.  God's light continues to shine in our world today through Prayer, Scripture, Sacraments, and Fellowship.  May we not only use our sight to recognize the Lord's presence, but may we also shine with the light of faith to help others draw near to Christ.

Simeon, filled with the Holy Spirit, held the baby Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying:

“Lord, now let your servant go in peace;
your word has been fulfilled:
my own eyes have seen the salvation
which you prepared in the sight of every people,
a light to reveal you to the nations
and the glory of your people Israel.”  (Luke 2:29-32)

May our eyes be open, to see God's hand touching and blessing our lives today!

Like a bridge that connects two shores, Jesus Christ comes into our world to unite us to God and one another.  Fully human like us, he teaches us about God and guides us to heaven.  Fully divine, he has the power to overcome sin and death and bring healing and reconciliation to our lives.

The Magi followed the Star which led them to Jesus Christ - the source of all Light.  Through their journey, they reveal two points for consideration today:

  • How do we seek the Light of Christ in our lives?
  • How do we share the Light of Christ with one another?

The Feast of the Epiphany - where light shines upon us for understanding, insight, and hope - strengthens us to welcome God's light into our hearts, that we may be a light to those around us!

The Holy Family encountered great extremes of blessing and hardship.  Their witness can teach us two crucial lessons:

  • They faced life together
  • God was with them

The example of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph can inspire us to call upon God's help as we walk with our families through life.

In A Christmas Carol we see two completely different portraits of Ebenezer Scrooge: on one hand he is a tight-fisted miser whose heart is cold; on the other hand he is a fully alive uncle and employer who wishes "Merry Christmas!" to friends and strangers alike.

What happened?  What brought about the transformation?  Simply put, the power of Christmas - Jesus Christ - touched his heart and changed his life.

This power continue to speak to us today.  The incarnation of Jesus - God becoming like us - removes all barriers and obstacles that keep us from the Lord and one another.  By recognizing the parts of our lives that have "Bah!  Humbug!" and turning to Christ, we can receive the power and grace of Christmas.
