The Gospel today reminds that the love of God is the source of all love from which all other loves and graces find their meaning and power.  Do we love Christ above all else?  Do we place God first in our hearts?  May we continue to commit our lives to Jesus - in whose Sacred Heart flows the Love of God!

The reality of divorce touches all of us.  What's more, the Gospel reading today reminds us that divorce has been issue from the very beginning.  In the messy and difficult moments of life, may our faith give us strength to build up marriage and help comfort those who are struggling with divorce.

Both James and the Lord point out the natural consequences of good and evil in the Scripture readings today.  Our choices have real effect in our lives, both natural and spiritual.  May we seek God above all else, allowing the grace of Jesus Christ to guide what we say and what we do.

James offers straightforward, practical advice: we know that there is evil in the world...avoid it!  When we draw near to God we place our lives under the grace and strength of the one who died and rose that we might have eternal life.

God keeps calling, inviting us to respond.  What's holding us back?  What grace do we need to pray for so that we can offer our hearts to the Lord and one another?  Here I am Lord!  I come to do your will.

Life offers its share of transitions, moments when we entrust our work to another and turn over our efforts into someone else's care.  Of course, that means that things are going to get done differently - maybe in a way that we would never do - and we learn how to let go and allow things to happen beyond our control.  The key ingredient to this handoff?  Trusting and relying on God to see it through.

Life has its share of heartache and hardship.  We all face struggles, challenges, and conflict.  The question is, what guides and directs the words we say and the actions we do?  What aspect of our faith can serve as the essential compass to steer us through life?  The answer: LOVE.

The story of David and Bathsheba sounds like a Biblical soap opera, yet we are reminded that God's grace overcomes sin - often through slow and steady growth that starts small.  Like a mustard seed, our faith in Christ confronts the challenges of this world and grows into a love that casts out all sin in the light of Christ.

The Light of Christ is like a lamp - meant to be set forth to give light to all.  St. Thomas Aquinas, through his study and prayer, sought the Divine Light, and he offers us an example to follow today.

We call upon the Spirit of the Lord to strengthen us, so that we in turn can share God's Spirit with one another.  Working together, like St. Paul's example of a body, the Lord empowers us in community to bring the Good News to the world.

David's example of mercy toward King Saul shows us a path to follow in our own lives.  Rather than returning evil with evil, we are invited to bring the love and grace of Christ to the situations before us.

Samuel meets the sons of Jesse to anoint one king of Israel.  Each son appears kingly, but God replies:

“Not as man sees does God see,
because he sees the appearance
but the LORD looks into the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

May we see as God sees – both within our hearts and in the hearts of others – and respond with the love of Christ!

At the wedding at Cana the Lord's miracle of water to wine shows that God gives with quality and generosity.  This notion of gift is picked up in Paul's 1st Letter to the Corinthians.  These precious gifts - given by God - are meant to be used.  Our invitation today: to acknowledge the good things Christ has given and put them into practice.

The encounter between the Lord and the leper reveals the direct access that people have to Christ - even with horrible illness.  The leper's plea is met with the overwhelming response for healing and wholeness.  In the same way, may we openly approach Jesus in our need, trusting in his mercy and tenderness.

Jesus wept over the city of Jerusalem.  He sees the tribulation that will come, and he opens his arms to embrace the sadness...that he might touch it and bless it.  May we turn to the Lord in our moments of sorrow and allow his grace to guide us.  Sorrow is not the end, and with God's help we will face our tears with hope.

Life offers difficulties and multiple uncertainties.  What's more, no one knows the hour when we will be called by God out of this world.  So how do we live?

Answer:  Fully alive in the present moment!

How?

  • What's your "bucket list" of unfinished business?  Get 'er done.
  • Perform a daily diagnostic.  It's called an Examination of Conscience.
  • Dare to share your heart.  Say "I love you" to the people in your life!

It's all about blessings.  God lavishes graces and blessings upon us...let's take time to acknowledge them.  And then out of gratitude...let's consider how we might be a blessing to others.  Consider today how we might share our time, talent, and treasure to bless the life of another...drawing us closer to the Lord and one another.

Sometimes we need to be reminded that the Lord welcomes us every time we turn from our sins and seek God's grace.  If there is anything holding us back (you know...fear, doubt, worry, shame, sin, or some other spiritual junk) then perhaps today is our chance to return to the one who loves us completely.

St. Paul lays out a problem and a solution in the 1st Reading today.  In the face of sin and death, Jesus Christ conquers all.  As we face the struggles before us today, may we turn to the Lord for the grace we need.  After all, the victory is His.

The images of a mustard seed and yeast remind us that little things can bring about big changes.  The spiritual virtue of Hope empowers us to face our lives with the grace of Christ, who will work through us in little ways to make a difference in the world.
