The contrast between the first reading and the Gospel shows two very different examples of behavior.  It begs a question: How does our faith help us to live in the routine and everyday challenges we encounter?  When people see us, do they see Jesus Christ?

Entrusting the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven to Peter, Jesus establishes the Church upon a rock that hell itself cannot prevail against.  Christ is the key; through prayer, sacraments and virtue we grow in grace through this life so that we can enter into the Lord's Kingdom in the next.

The Gospel today makes it clear that what we say has to measure up to what we do.  When our words and actions are in harmony, then we "practice what we preach" so that others will find in us a living witness of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Jesus offers a parable about the Kingdom of Heaven where merciful generosity embraces and transcends justice...reminding us that one day we will call upon the Lord for mercy when we stand before him at the end of time.

The Lord offers a three-step process to confront division within a relationship.  It's practical and powerful...and crucial for us to put into practice.

When a grain of wheat falls to the ground it dies, and through this sacrifice of itself it begets new life.  Our sacrifices - when directed by the great sacrifice of Jesus Christ - can also become a rich offering to the Lord, who will change and transform us with his gift of life.

A central aspect of the mystery of the Holy Trinity is the sense of communion.  Communion can thus serve as a measure showing just how far we have progressed in our journey as disciples.  Simply put, are we striving to build unity with one another in all aspects of our lives?  Do we foster our connections with the Lord and one another?  For in the end, if we are going to enter into Heaven, then we have today to remove the obstacles that keep us from communion.

Like a power tool, our lives come alive with the power of the Holy Spirit when we:

  1. Stay connected to Christ
  2. Live each day with conviction
  3. Recognize the unique contributions of one another

Come Holy Spirit!  Fill our hearts with the fire of your love!

In our moments of need we can learn from the Psalmist and say "The Lord is my shepherd" as we face the challenges of life.  What's more, as we follow Jesus Christ we offer our lives to help one another to seek the Lord as well.

"God so loved the world..."  These words remind us that Christ comes to us in love, transforming our lives and empowering us to go forth with God's grace to share this love with those around us.

The Lord - who knows that the agony of the Cross is coming - tells his disciples that one of them will betray him.  As we now prepare to embark into the Sacred Triduum of the Lord's Passion and Resurrection, may we acknowledge our sins and receive the mercy of the Lord.

In the Book of Numbers the people of Israel were delivered from their suffering when they looked upon the saraph which Moses set up on a pole; in the Gospel of John we learn that we are relieved of our suffering when we look upon the Lord who offers his life upon the Cross for our sins.

The Book of Hebrews reminds us that we have a great high priest, Jesus Christ, who has offered his once-for-all sacrifice on our behalf.  Through our encounter with the Lord, may our lives be touched by his grace as we live our faith in the world.

Jesus heals the paralytic AND forgives his sins.  In other words, an encounter with the Lord is a healing encounter.  May we both draw near to Christ and bring others in need - for the healing of body and soul.

Lent continues to drive home the point that forgiveness is crucial for our faith - an essential ingredient in a healthy spiritual life.  Who do you need to forgive today?  Who do you need to seek out and ask for forgiveness?  Christ shows us the way and commands us to carry it out.

I want to say a joyful THANK YOU for all who have downloaded and shared my podcasts this past year!  Here are a few quick facts:

  • One year in operation
  • 133 Podcasts
  • Sunday Masses, Daily Masses, Retreats, and Presentations
  • +21, 800 Downloads

What started initially as just a simple record of homilies has now grown to an average of 2-4 podcasts/week.  I am touched by the response I have received from people across the country, and I am honored to share my ministry here at Cathedral with you.  There is no charge for "Catholic Inspiration" and no requests for donations - this is an extension of my pastoral work here in the Diocese of Superior.

My one request: if you find these podcasts helpful - please share them with your loved ones!  Practically, that means:

  • Share these posts and podcasts with your friends on Facebook or other social media
  • Feel free to tell others who you think would like to follow (that whole "word of mouth" thing)
  • For those of you who use iTunes: go to "Catholic Inspiration" and give me a rating and review!

My only wish is for more people to draw near to Jesus Christ and one another through Study, Prayer, and Service.  May Year Two - which is blessed to coincide with the Year of Mercy - be filled with graces for us all!

Like a gentle rain that nourishes and renews the earth, the Holy Spirit comes upon the world to bring life.  The power of the Holy Spirit showers graces into our hearts with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.  This happens in two profound ways:

  • As individuals we are uniquely blessed with our gifts and talents
  • As community we unite and support each other

A simple diagnostic tool:  where do I see unity in my life?  Where unity is present, we can build and grow stronger with the Spirit's power.  Where it is absent, we have the opportunity to call upon the Spirit for healing and transformation.  Either way, come Holy Spirit!
