These two great figures in the Church had their share of spectacular successes and failures.  They sinned, yet with God's grace they kept their eyes fixed on Jesus - and they are wonderful examples for us today.  May we embrace our faith, return to Christ when we have sinned, and seek the Lord above all else!

Every church is a spiritual home where we bring our hearts to encounter Jesus Christ.  Big or small, ornate or simple, all churches come alive when they are filled with faithful disciples who seek the Lord and one another.  To all the people who call the Cathedral their home...happy anniversary!

The King of Glory comes to Jerusalem, but not in the way that people expect; rather, Mary & Joseph present their baby who is recognized by Simeon and Anna as the the Savior of the world.  Simply put, God comes to us in unique and unexpected ways - inviting us to be on the watch for God's presence in our lives and open to the little ways that the Lord can take our lives and do amazing things.

Mary's title "Mother of God" began when she said "yes" to the Angel Gabriel.  Chosen by the Father, she bore her Son who would be the bridge between Heaven and Earth...to save and set us free.  Thus, Mary was the instrument by which the Son of God came into the world.

Which is another way of saying that God works through people.  God chooses the unlikely to do amazing things...with the Lord's help.

Mary offers us an example about how we can cooperate with God's grace.  When we say "yes" to the Lord new possibilities arise.  As we embark on this New Year may we be open to the Lord's call in our lives and allow Christ to work through us to proclaim Good News in the world.

Christ, our Savior, Lord, and Friend...is also our King.  What's more, the King has given us some very specific commands - here are three:

  • Love one another
  • Forgive one another
  • Receive the Eucharist

As we follow the King may we carry out his commands!

St. Leo's life offers us three points to consider for our own faith:

  • We are committed to a long journey
  • There are challenges without
  • There are challenges within

The miracle of the Mass touches our lives in a number of crucial ways:  We hear the Word of God; we receive the Sacrament of Christ's Body & Blood; we unite as the Lord's disciples and pray together.  Below are three key words that can help us experience this miracle more fully:

  • Preparation
  • Focus
  • Engagement

What happens before, during and after each Mass can transform our hearts and change our lives.  May our communion with Jesus Christ nourish us for service in the world!

The mystery of the Holy Trinity - there is one God, revealed in three Persons - communicates that God comes to us in communion.  Indivisibly united, the Trinity teaches us that communion - being united together - is a key element to the practical experience of our lives.

Communion is crucial for all of us: family, friendship, co-workers, neighbors, classmates - even strangers - are all part of the fabric of our lives.  Indeed, we can evaluate ourselves in a very real way by taking measure of our communion with one another.

Where our communion is vibrant, we grow; where it is wounded, we heal; and where it is broken, we come to the altar to receive Jesus Christ in Holy Communion to renew the communion of our hearts.  May this communion within the Trinity transform and unite us with almighty God and one another.

The Cross of Christ - ugly, filthy with the blood of countless victims, jagged, and splintered - becomes the sign of the depth and breadth of agony Jesus endured.  As he embraces his suffering, the Cross becomes a bridge whereby he unites with all humanity, meeting us in our most profound moments of weakness and sin, and gives us hope through his triumph over death.

We must understand the Cross in the light of Easter joy:

  • For if we only focus on the Cross then we have no hope; life becomes dark and filled with despair.
  • And if we only focus on Easter joy then we have no respect for the gift of the Lord's Passion; we do not appreciate the price that was paid for our salvation.

We look to the Cross and allow Christ's Passion to touch our lives.  We unite with Jesus and give grateful thanks that he has redeemed us in every aspect of our lives.

Come to the Cross and unite your heart to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ.

Be redeemed by Love Himself, who gave his life to save and set us free.

At the Last Supper Jesus teaches and commands his disciples:

  • Receive his Body & Blood
  • Give your life in service to others

In our reception of Holy Communion may we be strengthened and renewed to offer our lives, following the example of Christ.

The Incarnation of Jesus - who is both the Son of God and the Son of Mary - helps us understand the way that God has drawn near to us.  The bridge between the human and divine was made possible when Jesus - born of Mary - closed the gap between heaven and earth.  God comes to us so that we may come to know God!

As we begin to move into a New Year, what gaps and obstacle are before us?  As we begin to see the challenges in our lives, may we turn to the Son of Mary for the help and strength we need to face life with the conviction that God continues to reach out to us in love.

There are times when we formally say "Yes, I accept" to new opportunities in our lives.  Mary's "yes" to the angel Gabriel gives us an example and model as the Lord invites us to follow our call.
